The Power of Focus – How “Real” is Your Picture of Success?

Having an online business, or developing your offline business online requires hours and hours of time at a computer. This can have some very negative productivity results if a clear focus is not strictly adhered to.

What I mean, is there are so many distractions online – checking your email, checking your Facebook profile or page, clicking on Skype to see your new messages. Then there are the forums you need to check, and your different messaging accounts – Window, Yahoo, MSN, not to mention the MSN home page or checking on the latest stock quotes or baseball scores.

It’s a wonder we get anything done at all.

Today, right after church, I jumped in our Camry with my wife and 12 yr old son and 16 yr old daughter. We headed for Grand Rapids, about 30 minutes away to see our other daughter play soccer. She is a great soccer player and is in her second year of college.

I grabbed a favorite book of mine so I could read during the halftime and other breaks. The book is “Getting Things Done” by David Allen. It is well worn and I have a lot of underlining and notes.

I was astounded by what I read. I haven’t looked at this book in about 4 months. But what’s interesting is even though I have read this chapter a number of times, it never jumped out at me like it did today. It was like I never read this before!

There’s no way I can share adequately the content of this book. I can share my excitement about what it means to me and you can possibly benefit.What jumped out at me to day is this:

The Power of Focus.

Albert Einstein said “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” I am coming to really believe that. What David Allen points out is the focus we hold in our minds affects what we perceive and how we perform. When you focus on something, your online business, your golf swing, or an article you need to write, that focus instantly creates thought patterns and ideas you wouldn’t have had otherwise. Even your whole body responds to that image in your head, as if it were reality.

Do you see how powerful this is? Something else happens in our brains when we create and focus on a clear picture of what we want. This is called the RAS or Reticular Activating System. This is our brain’s search function, so much more powerful than a computer’s. It is programmed by what we focus on, and more primarily, what we identify with.

For example if you have your focus and passion set on getting a red BMW M6, your head will turn at every red car – just to see if it is a BMW. There have been volumes of books and papers written about the RAS. But what is fantastic is that something automatic and extraordinary happens in your mind when you create and focus on a clear picture of what you want.

Here is what David Allen says in his book about this:

“There is a simple but profound principle that emerges from understanding the way your perceptive filters work: you won’t see how to do it until you see yourself doing it. One of the most powerful skills in the world of knowledge work, and one of the most important to hone and develop, is creating clear outcomes.”

I have heard it so many times from people like Bob Proctor, Jeffrey Combs, Jim Rohn and Anthony Robbins – about picturing vividly in your mind what your success will look like. But David Allen has a unique style that really brings it home for me.

So I encourage you to build those vision boards, collect photos of your dream home, car, vacation, charity, or whatever it is that you are building your business for. Spend quality time each day just “daydreaming” picturing EXACTLY “what” it is going to look like. Picture yourself driving that red M6. Feel the warm sand squishing up between your toes, as you walk on the beach in front of your 5,000 square foot home. Make your vision so real that you can literally “taste” it.

You Mean I Have to Change to Be Successful in MLM?

Do I really need to change to be successful in network marketing? Yes. You probably need to change your thinking most of all. People resist change. It’s a fact. Most companies resist change. Companies expend enormous efforts to maintain the status quo. Why? Primarily because people run the place and people work there and people don’t like to change.

It’s funny to recognize the habit patterns we do every day. I drive the same route to the store, for example. In church I sit in the same general area – usually the same seat. The same people are in front of me. We don’t like change, because we are comfortable where we are.

This article is really about leaving our comfort zone. Until we embrace change and have the courage to step out of our comfortable surroundings, our MLM dream will remain elusive. For most of us, it is not until the pain of staying the same becomes greater than the pain of change that change even becomes a consideration.

Some people are better at responding to a crisis than they are at seeking out opportunity and change. How do you invest your assets and your energy? What circumstances bring out the best in you? Are you “change avoiding” or “change seeking?”

Start doing little things to change your set habit patterns. Drive a different route. Eat at a different restaurant. Get gas for your car at a different station. Sit in a different place in church. Brush your teeth with your left hand. Doing little things like this on a consistent basis will make it a lot easier for you to make the bigger changes.

How “Get Rich Quick” Thinking Sabotoges Your Business

I have a growing business where I assist offline businesses (think: brick and mortar) get an online presence that really kicks butt and gives them a great “edge” over their competition.

One of the big hurdles that I have to overcome is the general underlying feeling that if you have a website it should somehow be “instant profit” or at least a lot more “instant” than growing a regular offline business.

Most offline businesses don’t make a good profit for 2 to 3 years, sometimes many more years. This is considered “normal.” But when you pay $2000 to $10,000 or more for a fancy website, you expect it to start pulling in those customers and those dollars pretty quickly.

There is a disconnect in expectations online. It just doesn’t work that way. In fact if nothing is done to optimize a website and nothing is put in place to start attracting traffic and building a sales funnel, their website could sit for 20 years and never make them a dime.

This same “instant gratification” mentality is very prevalent in the Internet Marketing and Network Marketing mindset. For some reason, getting rich quick is the prevailing expectation, and when this doesn’t happen, people quit and jump into another business that is more promising. They just start the same unrealistic game over and over again.

What is disgusting is how the Gurus with the non-stop product launches use the “get rich quick” strategy to sell their products. And they sell a ton of them because of it. The copy writing is very skilled and polished, and is sucks a lot of hungry people in to latch on to yet another Shiny Object.

What can you do to keep this unreal “get rich quick” expectation from sabotaging your online business?

1)Quit buying any more money making programs. You already know enough. If you don’t, hang out in the Warrior forum and you will learn a lot there.

2) Plan on your online success taking about the same time as an offline business would take.

3) Don’t quit, and don’t jump from ship to ship. Stay your course and map out a definite plan as to where you will be every 3 months. If you can see progress, and see more leads being generated, this brings a lot of excitement. Keep doing more of the same.

4) Re-evaluate your plan, based on how well it is working or isn’t working. Change it if you need to, and commit again to working your plan.

Remember, Napoleon’s classic work is entitled “Think and Grow Rich.” There is not one bit of “get rich quick” thinking to be found in this great book.

Are You Planning Your Future? Or Just Flowing With the Crowd?

j0438652I’ve been listening to the Slight Edge CD’s, by Jeff Olson. There are 3 of them and I am on my 3rd time through. I just can’t put the Slight Edge down right now.

One of the biggest “breakthroughs” for me was a simple re-defining of what a “plan” really is.  When I set a new goal, lets say having $78,000 in the bank by October 20, 2010, the next step is to write out a plan.

In the past, I would look at this task of creating a plan and my mind would rebel because the task was not only too big, but I didn’t understand exactly HOW I was going to get there.

The Slight Edge is all about having massive success, not by winning the lottery or having a huge break-through, but in the day by day little steps you take – that are easy to do. And the big downside – they are also easy NOT to do.

Henry David Thoreau made a startling revelation:  “The masses of men lead lives of quiet desperation.”  Statistics show over and over again that only 1 in 20 people will reach retirement with enough money to live comfortably. The masses who are leading lives of quiet desperation are the 95% crowd who everyday are blaming the economy, the weather, their boss, their spouse or their circumstances.

James Allen says of these people “They curse the effect, while they nourish the cause.” So if you don’t want to just flow with the crowd and live day by day in mediocrity, there is a way out. But it isn’t easy to do. It takes discipline.  And it is oh so easy not to do, too.

So how does constructing a plan fit with your desire to be part of the 1% of people who have a high 6 or 7 figure annual income? We’ll get to that in a minute, but first of all I need to mention a phenomenal and simple strategy designed to give you continual improvement in anything you do. Here it is:

PLAN – DO – REVIEW.  PLAN – DO – REVIEW.  Start with a plan. Follow up with doing -action. When you get to the “small step” goal of your first plan, review.  Review your action and your plan. Were you on track? Are you moving towards your goal? Do you need to make any course correction? Write it all down. Now, on to the next step –  what is your new plan – do – review?

This simple strategy is how Japan “ate our lunch” in the auto industry in the 1980’s and 1990’s.  Honda and Toyota operated their whole company along this simple continual improvement strategy of plan, do and review.

So in order to construct a plan that will move you toward your BIG goal, use this simple plan, do, review strategy over and over again.  Plan out a small step, something you know will move you in the right direction. Then take immediate ACTION. Finally, review your plan and action, and implement any course correction that is needed.

What will happen is this. As you take a few of these small steps, you will start figuring out, step by step,  exactly what you need to do to keep getting closer to your finish line.  Instead of waiting around and looking for the big breakthrough that rarely ever happens, this “slight edge” strategy will insure you success every time.

6 Dynamic Steps Detailing Your Blueprint For Getting Rich

j0396162Let’s get right down to business to discover what these 6 steps really
are about. Most people are interested in making a fortune. But alas, most
people won’t move out of their comfort zone to even find out how.

These steps are actually from Napoleon Hill’s famous book, “Think and Grow Rich.” I love that title. It doesn’t say “Work Hard and Grow Rich”, it says THINK! But most people disregard the importance of
how your mind and subconscious work together – for or against you. This article is all about training your mind to serve the real you.

Here are the 6 Steps that will make you a fortune.

1) Fix in your mind the exact amount of money you desire. It is not
sufficient merely to say, “I want plenty of money.” Be definite as to
the amount.
There is a psychological reason for definiteness that has
to do with faith. Being vague about how much money you desire will
produce vague results.

I personally have seen many people who won’t be specific, and I
think they don’t want to be held responsible if it doesn’t come to
pass. Saying “Plenty of money” gets them off the hook if they don’t
get “plenty” because plenty means “whatever”.

2) Determine exactly what you intend to give in return for the money you desire. (There is no such reality as “something for nothing.”)

What will you give, or what will you give up for the money you
desire? This is a critical decision, because this means work. It
means sacrifice. It means doing what you don’t want to do. But keep
this one thing in mind: If you do today what the masses will never
do, you will have tomorrow what the masses will never have.  So will
you step up and be part of the 5% who will DO? Or stay in your mediocrity,
swimming with the 95% who won’t DO?

3) Establish a definite date when you intend to possess the money
you desire.

This third key puts rubber to the road. It makes you extend yourself
and be a lot more definite. All of these 6 steps will push you to get
any “wishy – washy” junk out of your system. Setting a definite date
is like sealing the deal in stone. It puts traction to your faith.

4) Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire, and begin at
once, whether you are ready or not to put this plan into action.

Here comes the real test. Now this calls for ACTION – and a plan –
a DEFINITE PLAN. Notice it is a definite plan for carrying out
your what? Your DESIRE! Wow that’s awesome. You get to put into
action a plan tied to your desire. How big is your desire?

Well I’ll tell you one thing, just typing out these 6 steps has
gotten me all stirred up. If you read this article 2 or 3 times and
take action, you will get pumped up too!

5) Write out a clear, concise statement of the amount of money you intend to acquire, name the time limit for its acquisition, state
what you intend to give in return for the money, and describe clearly the plan through which you intend to accumulate it.

This is where a lot of people drop the ball. They think they can
just carry their new “goals” around in their head. Studies have
proven time and again that just writing down your goals will have a
huge impact on your success. So you have another choice to make.
Isn’t this fun?

6) Read your written statement aloud twice daily, once just before
retiring at night and once after arising in the morning. As you read, see and feel and believe yourself already in possession of the money.

Now I thought to myself – Why should I have to read my written
statement outloud? Then in every goal setting book, or CD or video
that I have studied, they ALL say “outloud.” This has magic in it. You
“hear” yourself and you get to see, feel and believe yourself already
in possession of the money. Is that a good enough reason to always
read it “outloud?”

It is very important to do all these steps, but especially step #6.
By doing this twice / day, you will start burning it into your
subconscious. And when the negative thoughts and people try to steal
your desire, you will have the strength of your conviction set in
stone and you won’t lose any momentum!

Take Charge Of Your Life – The Wisdom of Brian Tracy

Brian TracyThere have been hundreds of books and papers written on goal setting. I have read my share of them over the years. Even though many of the authors have different views about the mechanics of goal setting, most of them stress the importance of having clearly defined goals.

Setting goals is pointless if you haven’t yet taken charge of your own life. Brian Tracy has a chapter in his 2003 masterpiece book “Goals!” with that title: Take Charge of Your Life.

He talks about a defining moment when he was 21 years old, that changed his life. He realized that everything that would happen to him for the rest of his life was going to be up to him. No one was ever going to help him. No one was coming to the rescue. He learned at that young age what most people in their 40’s and 50’s still haven’t learned. And that is responsibility.

Here are 6 different ways to take charge of your life and start being a success.

1. Figure out what your biggest problem is. Are you in anyway responsible for this problem? This cuts right to where it hurts. Being self responsible and actually saying “I am responsible” will cancel any negative emotions you are experiencing.

2. Picture yourself as the President of your big company. Would you act any differently if you suddenly owned 100% of the shares? This is so important when it comes to building your own network marketing business. Are you just a part-timer or a some-timer? To be successful you need to assume total ownership of your company. And then start acting like it.

3.  Make the choice today to never again blame anyone else for your problems. Instead accept total responsibility for every aspect of your life. What actions should you be taking? So many people go through life being a victim. They live a life of failure and mediocrity because they mistakenly blame someone else for their problems. A great action to take is to ratchet up your level of responsibility. Again say over and over “I am responsible.”

4. Commit to never again making an excuse and instead start moving ahead. Picture in you mind that your favorite excuses are really not even true. How would this change your actions? For many network marketers, they have many excuses why they can’t prospect, or pick up the telephone. This is a fantastic exercise to quit procrastinating and get productive.

5. Picture yourself as the important creative force in your own life. You are where you are and what you are because of your own choices and decisions. What do you think you should change? This is one of those exercises that smacks you right across your head. You are exactly where you are in life because of your thinking. Change your thinking. Refuse to accept mediocrity. Push yourself constantly toward your goal.

6. If anyone has ever hurt you, decide today to forgive them and let it go. Don’t even discuss it again. It is history.

Once you have grappled with the 6 items above, you will be much more ready to embark on your goal setting challenge. There is nothing like a positive “kick in the pants” to foster more responsibility and less blaming of others.
