Google adwords is one of the top methods to help you do very targeted marketing. Google has been the dominant search engine for over 7 years, and they are only getting stronger and bigger. The majority of people searching online use Google – and a big percentage of these searches are local searches – looking for a business right in your city or town. And what might be alarming to you – many of them are searching for you.
I continue to be amazed and bewildered why more local businesses aren’t using Pay Per Click advertising, because it is one of the quickest ways to drive traffic and increase sales. I really think there are 2 reasons why more local businesses don’t give Adwords a shot.
- 1) Most local business owners don’t have the time to learn much about how PPC (Pay Per Click) works, and they haven’t taken the time to research it.
- 2) They have “heard” that PPC is expensive and that many people lose money just trying it.
In this article my goal is to answer both of these “issues” and hopefully give you one more marketing arrow to put in your quiver. When Google adwords is done “right” – and for the right business – the results are amazing. Your marketing ROI – Return on Investment – never looked better.
My biggest complaint against most traditional marketing – yellow pages, direct mail, newspaper, radio and TV – you have no real way to gauge your ROI. You can certainly get a “feel” for what marketing is driving your sales – but you just aren’t sure. With Google Adwords – they have amazing analytics to assist you in optimizing each one of your ads.
Here’s the great benefit of Google Adwords:
You know exactly what is going on. Google supplies you with a whole host of different tools so you can analyze and measure your adwords performance. One important thing with Google is “relevance.” They actually give you a “quality score” based on how relevant your ads are to the keywords you chose, and also how relevant your website is to the keywords and the ads that you created.
In other words, if you have a website about 150 different kinds of dogs, and your keyword is “Labrador puppy toys” – the link to your website better not send them just to your “home page.” That is not being relevant. You need to send them to the exact page where you talk about “Labrador puppy toys.”
Google actually raises or lowers your Adwords price based on your quality score. So to get better pricing, (and better ROI!) be smart about increasing your quality score. Google has ways to measure all of this and will even look at your website and grade that too.
What kinds of businesses do well by using PPC?
One rule of thumb for local service businesses is “what is the value of one new customer?” If this number is above $300 – Google adwords could work great. Pay Per Click works really well for bigger “customer value” businesses, like doctors, dentists, chiropractors and attorneys – and roofing companies, and flooring businesses.
If you sell products and have an online store, this is a whole new ball game. Google adwords – Pay Per Click – could work incredibly well, but it’s important to define your market, and do some research on your competition. It’s also very wise to put yourself in your customer’s shoes, and think like them for a day or two. What are they wanting from your product? If you can discover more of the emotional reasons why they are ready to pull out their credit card for your product, and you target your Google adwords marketing around this emotional reason, you will be light years ahead of your competition.

Which Craigslist ad do you think sells more services? A full color one or the plain text only ad? Which ad grabs your attention more?
What if you have a full color graphic showing your prospect the answer they are looking for, do you think that you will possibly win more business? No doubt about it!
Now let’s take this a step further. Your full color graphical ad should be “click-able.” This means that anywhere on your graphic, your prospect can click and be taken directly to your website, or Facebook page. Now this is very important. >>>>> What page on your website or blog would YOU send your prospect to? It should be the exact page that your full-color ad talks about. For example, if your graphic is all about how to train Fox Terriers, you wouldn’t want send them to your home page that is all about the top 25 family dogs.
Here’s another example! If you came to this “page” through Craigslist or Backpage or another site, you landed right on this “relevant” page talking about Click-able ads. If I didn’t know better, I could have sent you to my home page, but that would have been a “disconnect” in your mind. You would have had to search for my post or page talking about Clickable Craigslist Ads.
So how does this work, and how much does it cost?
I used to own my own sign company, so I know quite a bit about graphics that grab attention. OLD SALES GURU MYTH # 1 “Cold Calling is a Numbers Game”
When all you know is the traditional way of cold calling, selling is indeed a numbers game. Yes, you can call people over and over. You can also chase them until they listen just so that you go away.
Have you ever wondered how someone came up with the “numbers game concept?” It was really about the rejection we constantly experience when making cold calls. The boss just said to call someone else, and so we did. The idea is that if we call a hundred people a day, then we should squeeze out at least a few good leads.
However, there’s a better and easier way of getting your product or service message across — all on one call. If you simply change your cold calling approach, you’ll make fewer calls and more sales. How? By engaging in conversations. Yes, that’s right. Just talk to people…in your normal tone of voice, and without the usual sales pitch approach.
When we focus on relationship rather than salesmanship, we’re calling with the anticipation of meeting someone new. We’re looking forward to a pleasant conversation to find out whether we can be of service. The other person subtly but powerfully feels this mindset. You’re no longer meeting with defense and resistance right from the start. That will dramatically change the way people respond to your cold calls.
OLD COLD CALLING GURU MYTH # 2 “Use a sales script”
People can tell when you’re reading from a script, even if you think you’re pretty good at it. There’s just nothing personal about a sales script, and people pick up on that. Being artificial immediately tags you as a typical salesperson. Therefore, if you can learn to get your message across in a different way, then you’ll eliminate the negative triggers that can lose your sale within seconds.
So once again, the best way is to begin with a conversation. Anticipate a dialogue, not a monologue. People will respond much more positively. When you allow a conversation be natural and to “breathe,” they know you’re present and listening. T hat feels good to someone who is having to “fend off” salespeople who are really just talking billboards.
OLD COLD CALLING GURU MYTH # 3 “Focus on closing the sale”
Are you “going in for the kill” with your closing sale technique? If you are, you could end up killing your deal instead. Old cold calling sales techniques do nothing more than pressure potential clients. They feel like they’re being chased. What do most people do when they feel chased? They run! They naturally want to retreat away from that pressure — and that pressure is you. So learn to avoid the “push-pull” dynamic between you and the potential client. You’ll actually find the sales process moving forward much more naturally (and more often) than when you’re forcing things.
In this old myth, the idea is that if a sale is lost, it’s usually at the end of the sales process. The truth is that it’s often lost at the beginning of the cold call. When all you’re doing is going for a sale, the other person can sense it, no matter how well you think it’s camouflaged. When someone senses this sales pressure, “The Wall” goes up and the defenses come out. So stay away from focusing on making the sale. Rather, your goal is always to discover whether you and your potential clients are a good fit.
I can’t tell you how useful these new ideas have been in my own life, and in the lives of hundreds of others who have tried it. It’s not always easy to shed the old cold calling myths. Nevertheless, it’s worth it. With a little practice, you’ll come to a place of actually enjoying your cold calls and getting better results.

You may be wondering if your local yellow pages is going to keep bringing in new customers for you. Please listen up! Yellow pages are losing customers right and left, and the experts claim that in less than 5 years they will no longer exist.
So what is a small business supposed to do now to advertise and market their business?
A simple answer would be: Your Website!
But most people know that just throwing up a website won’t attract any more business. Many businesses paid a lot of money for a pretty website, and were very disappointed that customers didn’t just start flocking to their front door.
